Statement

Only five years ago I discovered that working in clay could be fun and challenging. For years I was searching for a medium that could help me fully express my ideas. One day I found a book about ceramic figures and realised that clay had many facets. I was hooked and immediately started learning about ceramics at a local night class.

My main interest lies with figurative sculpture but recently I have started making sculptural pots. The human face and body can be portrayed in numerous ways, and I am intrigued to see how far I can explore expressions, features, colours and textures. Sometimes I plan the pieces I’m going to make and sometimes they just evolve. My influences range from African, Indonesian, Oceanic and Chinese sculpture to Fashion, Modern Tribalism, Art Nouveau Style and Japanese Animation.

I work mainly with earthenware and stoneware paperclay. I have used glazes, but at the moment I prefer to paint each fired piece with acrylic paint. I like the immediacy of the colours and also I only need to fire my sculptures once. I also enjoy using mixed media with my pieces and would love to experiment further to see how wire, nails, textiles etc. could enhance the ceramic form.
