StatementThis love affair with ceramics started in 1980 when I attended a pottery evening class. Like most people I have undergone a metamorphosis, trying different clays. I have no formal training but just by trial and error have discovered an aptitude for creating mainly human figures (some semi-abstract). Using one of the Scarva Earthstone clays (ES20) to make the form: It is burnished and then bisque fired to 10000C, followed by smoke firing. Some have an upright stance, while others, just by repositioning the head or changing the posture, can show different personalities. The finished figures have been said to have a strong presence. I have produced some studio pottery, raku and other sculptural forms. My other interests include photography, gardening and painting; gaining inspiration from ‘people watching’, magazines and scenes from nature. My other love is taking part in the activities of the Petersfield Arts and Crafts Society, of which I am chairman and membership secretary. I am also a participating member of the Southern Ceramic Group. I have exhibited in Petersfield at the Flora Twort Gallery, Physic Garden and Festival Hall; also at The Art House at Westbourne, Portsmouth Museum, the Guildhall in Winchester, the Maltings in Farnham, Between Dreams in Botley and The Quay Gallery in Chichester. Last year, my work was shown at the Vivartis Exhibition in Witley, which was a great success for me, selling all items. I was given the Frank Westwood Award in year 2000 for two raku figures and a highly commended for a smoke-fired stoneware figure at an exhibition in 2005.
