StatementAfter many years painting commissioned animal portraits, I discovered the joy of clay sculpture. I found detailed drawing and painting quite restrictive but the tactile medium of clay has given me a sense of freedom. I have completed a City and Guilds course in Ceramic Design and it has led me to experiment with more natural and unusual surface techniques. Some of my slab-built animals and figures are coated in a clay slip and then smoked with paper and sawdust. I feel the subtle markings of the of smoke-firing and the use of oxide washes on my stoneware pieces compliment my fine art background.
