Overview

The magic of making things from clay was first revealed to me at the University of Southampton’s pottery studio in 1973, and after many years of evening and college classes, plus a spell with Jan Griffiths at Botleigh Pottery, I have now set up my own workshop at home.

I was drawn to making pots on the wheel from the start and now most of my work is thrown domestic earthenware.  Much as I enjoy the throwing, it’s the decoration that I really love: the challenge being to find a design that will bring the pot to life.  Currently I decorate with coloured slips, which are painted, trailed and sponged onto the leather hard clay, using paper-resist and sgraffito techniques to highlight the design.

I aim to make brightly coloured, light-hearted pieces incorporating a range of themes, including plants, animals, houses and landscapes. My current work features quaysides and harbours inspired by summer sailing excursions along the south coast. I also make one-off celebratory pieces for birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, new homes etc.
